From School Day to Strong Futures: Inside YMCA CEP at Bates Elementary

The YMCA of Greater Louisville Childcare Enrichment Program (CEP) is making a powerful impact for students and families across Jefferson County Public Schools. Serving K–8 students, the program provides high-quality before- and after-school care—from 7 a.m. until the start of the school day and from dismissal until 6 p.m.—offering families a safe, convenient, and affordable option right at their child’s school. Full-day care during school breaks and financial assistance options further ensure access for those who need it most.

CEP is designed to support the whole child. Students benefit from homework help, literacy enrichment, and hands-on, themed activities in art, STEM, nutrition, and physical activity—all within a safe, supportive environment led by trained staff. During KYOSA’s recent visit to Bates Elementary, students were fully engaged in rotating activity stations and gym time, including a high-energy, Kentucky Derby-themed art project that showcased creativity and joy in action.

At the heart of the program is Site Director Kristina Lawson, whose 30-year career with the Y reflects a deep and personal commitment to out-of-school time. A Bates Elementary parent-turned-leader, Kristina has witnessed firsthand the long-term impact of these programs—now even seeing her own daughter teaching at the school. For Kristina, it’s all about relationships: from reconnecting with former students’ families in the community to celebrating milestones like weddings and careers. Her story is a testament to the lasting ripple effect of quality OST programs—shaping not just students, but families and entire communities for generations.
